How to go back from Windows 11 to Windows 10 without formatting

Specifically, on June 28, Microsoft started the first beta release to allow testing of the new system on millions of Windows 10 devices already participating in the Windows Insider Program, including Windows 10 devices that do not meet the requirements to run Windows 11, so everyone can generally test Get the next version of Windows now, experience its features, and get first impressions. But we all know that beta versions of any system are riddled with technical bugs simply because they are "not perfect".

How to go back from Windows 11 to Windows 10 without formatting

So, if you recently signed up for the Windows Insider Program just to test Windows 11 on your primary device but noticed that the build is heavy or has an annoying problem, here are the steps to go back to the previous stable version of Windows 10 without formatting or having to reinstall Windows 10 from scratch.

Steps to return to Windows 10 without format

One of the advantages of the Windows operating system is that when a user installs a new update and switches from the current version to another, he immediately creates a folder on the hard drive called Windows Old. This folder contains a complete backup copy of the previous version so that if the user encounters any problem, he can simply go back to the version that was installed before the update.

The same goes for Windows 11; Once you've signed up for the Windows Insider Program and installed the Windows 11 beta via Windows Update, you'll find the Windows. The old folder in Partition C contains your previous Windows 10 version files, here's how to recover them.

back from Windows 11 to Windows 10

All you have to do in Windows 11 beta is open the Settings app either through the start menu or click on Win + I together, then in the System section scroll down and hit on recovery. Then, under the Recovery Options section, you will find the Previous version of Windows option, which is responsible for restoring the previous version using the Windows Old folder. But note that if 10 days have passed since the update from Windows 10 to Windows 11, the old folder will be automatically deleted to save space on the hard drive, so this option will not be available. While if you have not exceeded this period and want to go back to the previous version, then press Go back.

Now the Go back to the earlier build will appear, through which you can complete some actions before returning from Windows 11 to Windows 10. At first, you will be asked to select the reason you want to go back, is it because the previous version is faster, or because it is more stable or easier to use? Then select the reason and you can provide feedback to explain the reason in detail as well, after that click Next.

The system then tells you Do you want to check for the latest available updates? Even if there is a problem with the current version, new updates can solve it, and if you insist on the decision to return, click on "No, thanks" to complete the rest of the procedures.

Then, Windows starts letting you know what might result from the decision to go back, such as that some programs and apps you're currently using may need to be reinstalled after you go back to Windows 10, and any modifications you've made in Windows. 11 settings will revert back to their default state again in Windows 10 In addition, it is advised to take backup of important files in case anything goes wrong during the downgrade process. If everything looks good to you, click Next.

Finally, Windows thanks you for your experience with this Windows 11 beta, and you are notified that the next beta builds will be installed as soon as they are released since your PC is still in the Windows Insider Program. If you do not want it, at the end of the article we will explain the steps to exit the program to stop getting more trial versions, but for now, press the button to Go back to the earlier build.

Right after that, the Restore Previous Version of Windows screen appears, Windows is now restoring a copy of Windows 10 from the Windows Old folder, a process that takes about 15 minutes, at least in our experience, but it can take longer if your hard drive is in Your computer's hard drive, HDD the SSD.

Once done, it will boot into Windows 10 and everything will be as it was before installing the Windows 11 beta.

Exit Windows Insider

To avoid installing upcoming beta builds, open the Settings app and go to the Update & Security section, then click on Windows Insider Program from the side menu and activate the Stop getting preview builds, in order to avoid installing upcoming beta builds.
